US Syria envoy urges Syrian army, Kurdish fighters to halt Aleppo violence

Istanbul, Jan 8, 2026 (AFP) — Washington's special envoy to Syria on Thursday issued an "urgent appeal" to the Syrian government and Kurdish fighters to halt their fighting in Aleppo, where deadly clashes have claimed at least 21 lives.

In a post on X, Tom Barrack issued "an urgent appeal to the leadership of the Syrian government, (the) SDF, local authorities in Kurdish-administered areas, and all armed actors on the ground: pause hostilities, reduce tensions immediately, and commit to de-escalation", urging all parties "to exercise the utmost restraint".
