"We have engaged over the course of just last weekend directly with the PYD," spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters, referring to the powerful Kurdish Democratic Union Party. The meeting took place "last weekend" outside of the region, she said, adding that previous contacts were handled through intermediaries.
