ISTANBUL, Aug 8, 2011 (AFP) — Two police officers were killed Monday in seperate attacks in southeast Turkey, the state news agency reported.

One died of his injuries in hospital after being wounded when his vehicle set off a mine laid by Kurdish rebels Sunday in Hakkari province on the border with Iran and Iraq.

Three other officers had been wounded in the explosion.

Another police officer was assasinated Monday in Hakkari by an unidentified attacker, the Anatolia agency reported.

The plain-clothed officer had been recently appointed to the city and was shopping when a masked attacker shot him down, governor Muammer Turker was quoted as saying.

Clashes between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and security forces have increased since legislative elections in June and the group is active in Hakkari region.

On June 16, 13 soldiers were killed in Diyarbakir province, the worst loss of life for the army since October 2008. Seven PKK rebels were also killed in the assault.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Turkey and much of the international community, took up arms in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed some 45,000 lives.
