Istanbul, Nov 24, 2025 (AFP) — Turkish lawmakers from a committee tasked with fleshing out the peace process with the Kurds visited PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan in prison for the first time on Monday, the presidency of the National Assembly said in a statement.

The move comes six months after the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) formally renounced its armed struggle against Turkey after four decades of violence that had claimed some 50,000 lives.

Ankara began indirect talks with the PKK late last year, with Ocalan in February urging his militants to lay down their weapons and embrace democratic means to advance the Kurdish cause.

The parliamentary commission was formed to lay the groundwork for the peace process and prepare a legal framework for the political integration of the PKK and its fighters.

The National Assembly's presidency said the committee's meeting with Ocalan on a prison island off Istanbul "led to positive results".

The statement said they discussed the terms of the PKK's dissolution and disarmament, and a plan to integrate Kurdish fighters into the Syrian army.

Ocalan, 76, has led the peace process from his cell on Imrali island, where he has been held in solitary confinement since 1999.
