ANKARA, Oct 17, 2007 (AFP) — The Turkish parliament voted Wednesday to allow the government to send troops to neighbouring northern Iraq to crack down on Turkish Kurdish rebels based there.

A government motion seeking a one-year authorisation for one or multiple raids into northern Iraq was approved with the support of 526 lawmakers in the 550-seat house, while 19 deputies voted against, speaker Koksal Toptan said.

The motion said the timing and the scope of an operation as well the number of soldiers to be sent will be determined by the government.

It also underlined respect for Iraq's territorial integrity and stressed that any incursion would solely target the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), who Ankara accuses of using the region as a jumping board for attacks across the border on Turkey.
