ANKARA, Feb 24, 2008 (AFP) — Eight Turkish soldiers and 33 Kurdish rebels were killed in fighting Sunday in northern Iraq, the Turkish military said.

Leaders of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) are believed to be among the dead, the general staff said in a statement posted on its web site.

The figures bring to 112, according to the army, the number of PKK rebels killed since Turkey launched a major land offensive into northern Iraq Thursday evening.

The army, whose losses now total 15 dead, said the PKK toll does not include rebels killed by air and artillery fire.
