ISTANBUL, Dec 29, 2011 (AFP) — Turkish air strikes killed at least 11 villagers in the southeast of the country, near the Iraqi border, early Thursday, an official of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) said.

Ertan Eris, a councillor in Sirnak province where the bombing took place, said 11 bodies have been identified in the village of Ortasu, in remarks televised on the pro-Kurdish Roj TV.

Local security officials confirmed the bombing but declined to give the number of casualties.

Hasip Kaplan, a Sirnak MP, told AFP he was informed of the incident around 03.00 am (0100 GMT), and that "councillors and ambulances went to the area".

The pro-Kurdish Firat news agency reported that 28 villagers, including children, were killed in the strikes.
