PKK sets conditions for Turkey ceasefire

ANKARA, June 20, 2011 (AFP) — Separatist Kurdish rebels demanded the end of Turkish military operations and the official recognition of their jailed leader as conditions to renew a ceasefire, said a statement on Monday.

In the statement leaders of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) demanded that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announce publicly the end of military and police operations against the Kurdish separatist group.

The second condition demanded that the Turkish parliament officially invite Abdullah Ocalan to negotiations to solve the Kurdish problem.

Ocalan, who retains his influence despite being behind bars, had warned earlier that "all hell will break loose" after last week's parliamentary elections unless sporadic contacts he has had with officials in prison were upgraded to serious negotiations to resolve the 26-year Kurdish conflict.

"The creation of a durable ceasefire will only happen if everybody participates," Monday's PKK statement said.

Neither condition is likely to be met by Turkey, observers said.

The PKK declared a unilateral ceasefire in August last year, which it later extended until polls were held.

Erdogan's Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party won a third straight term in power since 2002.

The truce has been marred by several deadly PKK attacks and renewed military operations against the rebels.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Ankara and much of the international community, took up arms in the Kurdish-majority southeast in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed about 45,000 lives.
