TEHRAN, April 16, 2011 (AFP) — One person was wounded as the result of a bomb blast in the western city of Sanandaj in the Iranian Kurdistan province, the official IRNA news agency reported Saturday.

"Hours ago a bomb in a garbage can next to an ATM machine in a Keshavarzi Bank branch in Sanandaj blew up," IRNA reported.

The report added that "a person was wounded as the result of the blast but his general condition is satisfactory and he is currently in a hospital in Sanandaj".

IRNA added that "based on reports received the wounded person has heard another blast before the main blast".

The blast left the ATM machine damaged and a number of shop windows close to the blast were shattered, the IRNA report added.

Last November, authorities in Iranian Kurdistan said they defused two bombs hidden in the city of Sanandaj.

Western Iran, home to a significant Kurdish population, has been the scene of deadly clashes for years between security forces and Kurdish rebel groups operating from bases in neighbouring Iraq.

In September, a deadly bombing hit a military parade in the western city of Mahabad, killing 12 people and wounding at least 81.
