The attack took place as the bus, carrying employees of the local police academy, was passing through a residential area in the region's main city Diyarbakir.

Earlier reports had put the toll at three injured.

Initial suspicions fell on the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which has been fighting for self-rule in the east and southeast of Turkey since 1984.
