Paris, France, Jan 18, 2026 (AFP) — France's President Emmanuel Macron in telephone talks with his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa on Sunday urged a "permanent ceasefire" after fighting between Damascus troops and Kurdish forces.

"I conveyed to him our concern about the escalation in Syria and the continuation of the offensive carried out by the Syrian authorities," Macron said on X.

"A permanent ceasefire is necessary, and an agreement must be reached on integrating the (Kurdish-led) Syrian Democratic Forces into the Syrian state," he said.
