Latest developments in Israel-Hamas war

Jerusalem, Dec 27, 2023 (AFP) — The Hamas-run Gaza Strip's health ministry said Wednesday the death toll from the war with Israel now tops 21,100, about two thirds of them women and children.

Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel from Gaza on October 7. It resulted in the death of around 1,140 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Militants seized about 250 hostages, of whom 105 Israelis and foreigners have been released. Several others have been killed, including by friendly fire.

Determined to destroy Hamas, Israel is conducting a relentless air and ground offensive that has left vast areas of Gaza in ruins.

On day 82 of the war, here are five key developments from the past 24 hours:

- Firefights, strikes -

Israel again pounded Gaza with air strikes and shelling, with a spokesman for the Palestinian territory's health ministry reporting more at least 195 killed in attacks over the past 24 hours.

Later the ministry reported that 22 people were killed and 34 wounded in a strike that hit a house near Al-Amal hospital in the city of Khan Yunis.

The southern Gaza city has become a focus of heavy urban combat with repeated explosions lighting the sky, as heavy firefights raged again around Gaza City.

Near the far-southern city of Rafah, crowded with internally displaced people, witnesses said an air strike had wounded 11 people.

The army, whose chief warned the war will last "many more months", said the number of Israeli soldiers killed inside Gaza had risen to 164.

- 'Beyond a catastrophe' -

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said in a TV interview the war was "beyond a catastrophe", accusing Israeli leaders of planning "to get rid of the Palestinians".

Violence has surged in the occupied West Bank, where Abbas's Palestinian Authority is based, since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

An Israeli raid on the northern West Bank's Nur Shams refugee camp killed six people early Wednesday, the Palestinian health ministry said.

An army statement said its forces had launched an air strike during the "counterterrorism operation" in Nur Shams after explosives were hurled at ground troops.

- Communications restored -

Internet and telephone services that were cut on Tuesday were gradually being restored in central and southern areas of Gaza, the Palestinian telecommunications company Paltel said on X, formerly Twitter.

Human Rights Watch has warned that recurring communications disruptions in Gaza since the war began could "provide cover for atrocities".

- Regional tensions -

An Israeli strike in south Lebanon killed a Hezbollah fighter and two of his relatives, the group and state media reported.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah responded by firing rockets towards Kiryat Shmona in northern Israel.

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah vowed to avenge the trio, saying "no crime against civilians will pass without the enemy paying the price".

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp meanwhile vowed revenge over the killing of a top general, Razi Moussavi, on Monday in a strike in Syria attributed to Israel.

"Our response to Moussavi's assassination will be a combination of direct action as well as (from) others, led by the Axis of Resistance," Guards spokesman Ramezan Sharif said referring to Iran-backed groups in the region.

- Erdogan says 'no difference' between Netanyahu, Hitler -

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan lashed out at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying there was "no difference" between him and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Erdogan branded Israel a "terrorist state" and Netanyahu "the butcher of Gaza", while praising Hamas and calling it "a liberation group".

Netanyahu hit back, accusing Erdogan of "committing genocide against the Kurds".
