WASHINGTON, Oct 08, 2014 (AFP) — Kurdish forces are "holding out" against the Islamic State group in the Syrian border town of Kobane, and US-led warplanes have intensified bombing raids to push back the jihadists intent on seizing the area, the US military said Wednesday.

"Indications are that Kurdish militia there continue to control most of the city and are holding out against ISIL (IS)," US Central Command, which is overseeing the American-led air war in Iraq and Syria, said in a statement. US and Jordanian aircraft conducted an additional eight air strikes on Wednesday, it said.
