ARBIL, Iraq, Aug 10, 2014 (AFP) — Kurdish peshmerga troops on Sunday wrested back control of two towns from the Islamic State militants for the first time since US jets started bombing jihadist targets, officials said.

"The peshmerga have liberated Makhmur and Gwer," peshmerga spokesman Halgord Hekmat told AFP, adding that "US aerial support helped".

A regional official confirmed the Kurdish troops had reclaimed the towns after deadly battles.
