DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Nov 21, 2008 (AFP) — A 16-year-old Kurdish youth was jailed for seven years and five months Friday for involvement in violent protests in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast last June.

The teenager, who was identified only by his initials as F.G, was charged with hurling stones at police during street clashes in Diyarbakir alleging mistreatment of Abdullah Ocalan, the Kurdish rebel leader.

The court found him guilty of belonging to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), considered a terrorist organization by Ankara and much of the international community.

He was also charged with generating "propaganda" for the party, still lead by Ocalan who has been serving a life sentence for treason and separatism since 1999.

The PKK, took up arms for self-rule in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast 24 years ago, sparking a conflict that has claimed some 44,000 lives.
