ROME, Dec 26, 2007 (AFP) — Italian traffic police found 17 illegal immigrants hugging each other for dear life in a freezer truck near Rimini, press agency Ansa reported Wednesday.

The clandestine travellers, including six minors, were all Kurdish, and had endured temperatures of minus one Celsius (30 degrees Fahrenheit) having landed on the Adriatic coast in a Greek-registered ferry.

The agency reported that the lorry driver noticed something strange behind his cab and stopped at a motorway service station to check. Police have ruled out any involvement of the driver.
