SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq, July 31, 2009 (AFP) — Three Westerners were arrested on Friday by Iranian security forces for crossing the border between Iran and Iraqi Kurdistan, a senior official in Iraq's border guards told AFP.

"Three Westerners, with their backpacks, crossed the border with Iran at Ahmed Awa" before being arrested, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Their nationalities were not immediately clear.

Ahmed Awa, about 90 kilometres (55 miles) northeast of the autonomous Kurdish region's second-biggest city of Sulaimaniyah, is a popular tourist destination but lacks clearly marked borders with Iran.
