Iran executes Kurdish militant: state media

Tehran, Feb 22, 2023 (AFP) — Iran on Wednesday executed Arash Ahmadi, a militant linked to an outlawed Kurdish rebel group who was convicted of killing a police major in 2018, state media reported.

"Arash Ahmadi, also known as Sarkout, a member of the Komala terrorist group, was executed this morning," state television said.

Police major Hassan Maleki was assassinated in Ravansar, a town in the western province of Kermanshah, in August 2018.

In the report, videos were shown of Ahmadi "confessing" to be behind the attack.

Such videos are common in Iran and are frequently condemned by rights groups, arguing that confessions are often forced and the result of torture.

Komala is a Marxist group which seeks autonomy for Kurdish-populated regions of northern Iran and has been outlawed since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

Iran's western provinces of Kurdistan, Kermanshah and West Azerbaijan, which have substantial Kurdish populations, have been the scene of clashes between Iranian forces and Kurdish rebels.

Rights advocacy group Amnesty International says Iran is the world's most prolific user of the death penalty after China.
