PARIS, April 21, 2010 (AFP) — The first French archaeological dig in Iraqi Kurdistan since the 2003 US invasion has got under way in the ancient city of Erbil, France's foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

The dig started on Tuesday involving French, Italian and Belgian experts after a joint exploratory mission with Erbil's university, ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said in a statement.

Erbil, home to a striking but currently run-down citadel some 8,000 years old, saw successive waves of inhabitation by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and other civilisations.
