DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, July 19, 2009 (AFP) — Four people including two soldiers were injured in a mortar attack by Kurdish rebels against a military post in Turkey's southeast, near the border with Iraq, local officials said Sunday.

The attack late Saturday saw rebels fire six mortar shells from Iraqi territory towards a military border post near the village of Daglica in Hakkari province, the local governor's office said in a statement.

Some of the shells landed in fields nearby, injuring two villagers, while two soldiers sustained injuries when one of the shells landed near the army station, it added.

All of the injured were in good condition, the statement said.

Turkey claims that some 2,000 rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) have found a safe haven in northern Iraq from where they launch attacks on Turkish targets as part of their 25-year armed campaign against Ankara.

In October 2007, PKK rebels -- which Turkey said had infiltrated from Iraq -- ambushed a military patrol near the Daglica station, killing 12 soldiers and wounding 17.

The latest mortar attack followed a PKK annoucement Wednesday that they had extended a unilateral truce in their campaign until September 1 to help efforts to find a peaceful solution to the bloody conflict with Ankara.

Ankara has never formally recognised PKK's unilateral truces and the military has pursued operations against the rebels.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Ankara and much of the international community, took up arms in 1984 for self-rule in Turkey's Kurdish majority southeast, sparking a conflict that has claimed some 45,000 lives.
