Paris, Oct 15, 2022 (AFP) — Fire and gunshots erupted at the notorious Evin prison in northern Tehran on Saturday night, the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights reported, amid protests over the death of Mahsa Amini.

Flames and a plume of smoke could be seen billowing into the night sky and pops of what appeared to be gunfire could be heard in video footage shared by the human rights group on Twitter.

"A fire is spreading in Evin prison" and an "explosion was heard" from the facility, the 1500tasvir social media channel said on Twitter.

Chants of "Death to the dictator" -- one of the main slogans of a month-long protest movement that has flared over the death of Amini -- could be heard in the background of a video shared by 1500tasvir.

The 22-year-old, an Iranian of Kurdish origin, died on September 16, three days after falling into a coma following her arrest by the notorious morality police for allegedly breaching the Islamic republic's strict dress code for women.

At least 108 people have been killed in the crackdown, and at least another 93 have died in violence that erupted in Zahedan, capital of southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province.

The US-based HRANA human rights group says more than 5,500 people have been arrested in the crackdown.

Hundreds of those detained during the protests over Amini's death last month have reportedly been sent to Evin.

The prison is infamous for ill-treatment of political prisoners.

A group of hackers calling themselves Edalat-e Ali (Ali's Justice) posted videos in August last year of leaked surveillance footage from Evin prison showing guards beating or mistreating inmates.
