DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, March 10, 2011 (AFP) — A Turkish court on Thursday decided to abandon proceedings against a celebrated Kurdish poet and activist allowing him to return after 31 years in exile, a judicial source said.

Kemal Burkay, 73, who has been an advocate of the Kurdish minority, was the subject of proceedings for 37 years as part of an inquiry into a Kurdish party, the source at the court in southeastern Turkey said.

Burkay, considered a moderate, has lived in Sweden and Germany since Turkey's 1980 military coup.
