WASHINGTON, Oct 17, 2014 (AFP) — There have been "encouraging" signs in recent days in the battle over the Syrian border town of Kobane, with US air strikes slowing the advance of Islamic State jihadists, a top US commander said Friday.

General Lloyd Austin, in charge of the US-led air war against the IS group, said events in Kobane have been "encouraging" but acknowledged it was still "highly possible" the town could fall to the extremists.
