DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Dec 15, 2011 (AFP) — Turkish troops killed eight Kurdish rebels in southeast Turkey on Thursday, a local official said.

Clashes occured between members of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and security forces, when soldiers raided a house in rural Cay region in Bingol province, Bingol governor Mustafa Hakan Guvencer told Anatolia news agency.

Listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey and much of the international community, the PKK took up arms for Kurdish independence in southeastern Turkey in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed some 45,000 lives.
