DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, June 16, 2006 (AFP) — A bomb exploded in the mainly Kurdish city of Van in eastern Turkey overnight, causing material damage but no casualties, local security sources said Friday.

The bomb, left under a car parked near a residential building, went off around 1:00 am (2200 GMT) in the centre of the city, causing the vehicle to burst into flames, the sources said.

The blast also damaged several cars parked neraby.

It was not immediately clear who had planted the bomb.

Southeastern and eastern Turkey has been the theater of a bloody Kurdish rebellion since 1984, when the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), blacklisted as a "terrorist" group by Ankara, the European Union and the United States, began fighting for Kurdish self-rule in the region.

The conflict has claimed more than 37,000 lives.
