ANKARA, Nov 5, 2008 (AFP) — An explosion on Wednesday shook a building housing offices of the ruling Justice and Development Party in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast, Anatolia news agency reported.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the blast in Cukurca town, which caused only material damage.

Police sealed off the area and bomb experts were examining the scene, Anatolia said.

Kurdish militants have carried out bomb attacks against public buildings in the past.

Tensions in the southeast rose last month following reports that jailed Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan was mistreated in prison. The government has denied the allegations.

Violent demonstrations marred Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to the region at the weekend.

Turkey's southeast has been the theatre of a bloody conflict since Ocalan's separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party took up arms in 1984. The unrest has claimed about 44,000 lives.
