DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Jan 11, 2012 (AFP) — Turkish authorities on Tuesday revised down to 34 the number of Kurds killed in an airstrike on the Iraqi border last month.

The earlier toll was given as 35.

"The death toll is 34 according to final information," the governor's office of Sirnak province said in a written statement.

The victims were Kurdish smugglers, most of them younger than 20 years old. The government admitted it was a military blunder during an operation against Kurdish rebels.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party, which took up arms in Kurdish-majority southeastern Turkey in 1984, sparked a conflict that has claimed about 45,000 lives.
