ANKARA, Jan 17, 2010 (AFP) — A Turkish soldier was killed and another wounded Sunday in clashes with Kurdish rebel in southeast Turkey, the military said.

The fighting broke out in Batman province, where the army was conducting a security operation against the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the brief statement said.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Turkey and much of the international community, took up arms against Ankara in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed about 45,000 lives.
