Kurdish rebel attack on military post leaves two dead: report

ISTANBUL, Oct 29 (AFP) - 10h31 - A Turkish army reservist and a Kurdish rebel were killed late Friday in a rocket attack by rebel forces against a military post in the Kurdish majority region of southeast Turkey, the Anatolia news agency reported Saturday.

Four soldiers were slightly wounded in the strike at Erenkaya Koyu, a village in Siirt province, the agency said, adding that a search operation had been launched to track down the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has been blamed for the attack.

Southeastern Turkey has been the scene of a bloody conflict between PKK rebels and Turkish security forces, which has claimed nearly 37,000 lives since 1984.

The PKK, which is considered a terrorist organization by Ankara, the European Union and the United States, has stepped up its attacks in the region over the past few months after having observed a unilateral ceasefire from 1999 to June 2004.
